What is Synephrine?

Synephrine is the main "active" compound found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium/Bitter orange. The fruit of CA is also known as zhi shi (in traditional Chinese medicine), and as green orange, sour orange and Bitter orange in other parts of the world. Extracts from citrus aurantium contain a rare combination of five adrenergic amines: synephrine, N-methyltyramine, hordenine, octopamine, and tyramine.Synephrine is the main "active" compound found in the fruit of a plant called Citrus aurantium.
Synephrine is chemically very similar to the ephedrine and pseudo-ephedrine found in many OTC cold/allergy medications and in a number of weight loss and energy supplements which contain Ma Huang. Synephrine is also a stimulant, similar to caffeine and ephedrine. Synephrine binds with the Beta 3 cell receptors to increase the rate at which fat is released from body stores (lipolysis), along with increasing the metabolic rate. It offers all of the advantages of a stimulant. It can be used both to aid in fat loss and as appetite suppressant and research on animals indicate that it may help in depression. It is not recommended for use in isolation (in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is always prescribed in concert with other support herbs).


What is the effective dosage of Synephrine supplementation?

A dose of 4-20 mg of synephrine per day is a typical dose found in products providing 200-600 mg of a standardized citrus aurantium extract (3-6% synephrine).

What are the benefits of Synephrine supplementation?

• Synephrine provides an energy boost.
• It suppresses appetite and
• It increases metabolic rate and caloric expenditure. Therefore it is one of the active ingredients in fat loss supplements. (It binds with the Beta 3 cell receptors to increase the rate at which fat is released from body stores (lipolysis) for energy.)


What are the side effects of Synephrine supplementation?

At this point, the safety of Synephrine is still being evaluated, and although it appears to be safer than ephedra, it still carries risks in high doses. Increased body temperature may occur as the dose is increased. Drink plenty of cold water. May increase risk of heart irregularities and increase blood pressure. Synephrine (major contain of C A) is structurally similar to ephedrine and has vasoconstrictor properties which has adverse effect on body.
Cautions-
• Both isolated synephrine and citrus aurantium extract have been shown to raise blood pressure in animal studies. It should be avoided by individuals with cardiovascular concerns such as hypertension. It is not recommended for pregnant women or breast feeding women.
